Huskies Suffer First Loss of Season, 34-7 at Minnesota Duluth

Duluth, Minn. – Logan Lauters and Austin Sikorski rushed for two touchdowns each to lead #11 Minnesota Duluth to a 34-7 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win over #11 St. Cloud State University Saturday afternoon at Malosky Stadium in Duluth.
The Huskies suffered their first loss of the season and dropped to 4-1 overall. This was an NSIC North Division contest and the Huskies are 0-1 in divisional play. Minnesota Duluth is 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC North.
St. Cloud State quarterback Phillip Klaphake accounted for the Huskies only score of the game, a three-yard run to give his team a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter. Klaphake went over the 2,000 yard rushing mark in his career finishing the game with 16 yards and one touchdown. He completed 13 of 29 passes for 102 yards.
Senior runningback Michael Walker led the Huskies in rushing with 11 carries for 49 yards. Chad Peterson and Dan Brown each had three receptions for the Huskies. Brown had a team high 32 yards receiving.
The Huskies defensive unit intercepted two passes on back to back UMD drives in the second quarter. Marvin Matthews had the first pick of the game and his second of the season and returned it to the UMD 30-yard line. That set up the Huskies only score of the game two plays later. Eric Poggenburg had the second interception on the next UMD drive.
Jack Moro led the Huskies with a career high 13 tackles and teammate Kyle Risinger added 11 tackles, also a career high.
Minnesota Duluth ran up 471 rushing yards and finished the game with 488 yards of total offense while the Huskies were held to 190 yards of offense.
Sikorski rushed 17 times for 177 yards and two touchdowns and Lauters had 12 carried for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Erik Kline scored the fifth rushing touchdown of the day on a fake field goal attempt.
The last time the Huskies were held to seven points in a game was during the 2009 season, a 31-9 loss at Minnesota Duluth.
