Women's Basketball Defeats Southwest 72-47, Advances to Second Round of NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team matched up against Southwest Minnesota State in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health tournament this evening. The Huskies defeated the Mustangs 72-47. St. Cloud State will take on Winona State University on Saturday for second round tournament action.
Tonight's win improves the Huskies overall record to 19-8. St. Cloud State put an end to Southwest's season as they finished with an overall record of 4-25.
Two St. Cloud State players finished in double figures this evening. Junior guard Sam Price (Eau Claire, Wis.) finished with a team-high 19 points. Price made four shots from behind the arc, knocked down three of three shots from the charity stripe and dished out three assists. Senior guard Amanda Wagner (Webster) finished with 15 points on six of eight shooting from the field. Wagner pulled down five rebounds and grabbed six steals.
Senior point guard Nicole Anderson (Cannon Falls) made significant contributions as she finished with nine points, nine rebounds and a team-high six assists.
The Huskies took an early lead in the game as they went up 9-1 just three minutes into tonight's contest. St. Cloud State held the lead until Southwest went on a 10-0 run late in the first half. The Mustang's effort put them ahead 26-24 with 2:20 on the clock. Sam Price knocked down two three point shots in the last minute and a half to give the Huskies a 30-28 edge over the Mustangs heading into halftime.
Momentum picked up midway through the second half as the Huskies went on a 16-0 run spurred by an Amanda Wagner three point play. By the 2:42 mark the Huskies held a 62-43 lead. St. Cloud State outscored the Mustangs 42-19 in second half play.
St. Cloud State outrebounded Southwest 46-13. 16 rebounds came on the offensive end for the Huskies.
The Huskies shot 39% from the field and 82% from the charity stripe. Southwest connected on 37% of shots from the field but just 61.5% from the free throw line.
St. Cloud State advances to the second round of the NSIC tournament. The Huskies will host Winona State on Saturday at either 2 p.m. or 4 p.m. depending on the outcome of this evening's men's match-up. Winona State defeated Minnesota Duluth 74-56 in first round tournament play.
The Huskies last played Winona State on Feb. 8 and were defeated in an overtime battle, 69-71.
