Husky Football Opens Season with 49-35 Win at Southwest Minnesota State

It was the season opener for both teams and the Huskies take a 1-0 record into their home opener next Saturday at 6 p.m. against Winona State University.
Senior receiver Damon Treat (Fairfield, Calif.) had an all-around game as he caught seven passes for 129 yards, both career highs, and scored one touchdown. He also had a combined five kick returns for 140 yards including a 78-yard kick-off return.
Senior quarterback Phillip Klaphake (Princeton) and sophomore running back Ledell White (Milwaukee, Wis.) rushed for two touchdowns each. Senior receiver Eli Shoemaker (Graham, Wash.) finished the game with five catches for 136 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown reception. Redshirt running back Kenneth Walker (Walworth, WIs.) added a rushing touchdown for the Huskies on a 12-yard run.
White rushed for over 100 yards finished the game with 17 carries for 107 yards. Klaphake completed 15 of 26 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns. He hit the ground with 13 carries for 61 yards.
Senior defensive backs Jack Moro (Brookfield, Wis.) and Miky Woods (Brooklyn Park) each had 11 tackles, a career high for both players. Another senior back Eric Poggenburg (Cedarburg, Wis.) collected the Huskies first interception of the season at a key time, late in the fourth quarter on the Mustang four-yard line.
The Huskies spotted Southwest Minnesota State two touchdowns early in each half, only to have the Mustangs fight back, scoring two touchdowns in the final 3:02 of the second quarter to tie the game 21-21 at halftime.
On the first play of the second half, Klaphake found Eli Shoemaker for a 67-yard pass completion to give the Huskies a 28-21 lead. The Mustangs drew to within six points, 34-28 at the 6:43 mark of the third quarter on a Tyler Tonderum three-yard run. SMSU scored the last touchdown of the game, at 9:45 of the fourth for the final, 49-35.
St. Cloud State finished the game with 521 yards of total offense, 297 in the air and 224 on the ground. Southwest Minnesota State collected 477 yards, 307 passing and 170 yard rushing.
