Sauk Rapids, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University women's cross country squad claimed third place at the 2014 Bob Waxlax Invitational on Friday, Oct. 24 at the Wapicada G.C. in nearby Sauk Rapids, Minn. The Huskies posted 99 points in the 6K race, while Minnesota Duluth won the race with 16 points and Minnesota State University, Mankato was second with 53 points. Southwest Minnesota State placed fourth at 100 points and Concordia-St. Paul was fifth in the team standings with 114 points.
Individually, SCSU sophomore Samantha Sunstrom paced the Huskies with a seventh place time of 22:57 in the race that featured 45 runners. Teammate Rachel Sakry placed 20th in the race with a time of 24:15 and Zia Matti placed 24th with a time of 24:47. Jessie Hubley finished 32nd in the field with a time of 25:36.0 and Maria Hauer placed 34th at 25:56.
SCSU other runners in the race included: Lindsay Stassen (35th/26:11), Emma Gaustad (36th/26:28), Tristan Sproul (39th/27:03) and Savanna Hosler (42nd/27:29).
"It was a great honor for Coach (Bob) Waxlax to start our meet and to name the meet after him," SCSU coach Eric Hanenberger said. "He left a legacy as a coach and teacher. I know it was special for him to see and spend time with a number of his former athletes.
"On the women's side the effort was good, but didn't quite turn out the way we hoped at the end. We are going to tweak a few things over the next couple of weeks for conference."
The Huskies will next travel to the NSIC Championships in Wayne, Neb. on Nov. 8.
