Huskies Shutout Northern State in Round One of NSIC Tournament, 6-0

Sioux Falls, S.D. – St. Cloud State baseball kicked off post season play Wednesday afternoon as they took on Northern State University in the first round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) tournament. The Huskies defeated the Wolves 6-0 to move on to day two of the tournament.
The Huskies took an early 1-0 lead right away in the bottom of the first inning over Northern State as a groundout by Michael Jurgella scored Eric Loxtercamp from third. They would extend their lead 2-0 in the third off a RBI sacrifice fly by Brandon Arnold.
It was not until the seventh inning when the Huskies really took off as Zak Hoffman hit a two-run shot over the right centerfield fence for a 4-0 game. Northern would make adjustments defensively in the eighth but St. Cloud was able get two more runs for a 6-0 final score. Loxtercamp scored the first run as he stole home and the Huskies second run of the inning came on a single to center field by Zach Hoffmann.
Pitching a complete game and earning the win was senior Corey Fitzgerald as he struck out five and only allowed four hits. Fitzgerald moves his record to 7-2 on the season with the win. Leading St. Cloud at the plate was Garrett Fischer as he went 2-for-3 and Loxtercamp going 2-for-4 including two runs.
The Huskies (36-12) will be back in action Thursday, May 8th as they move the second round of the NSIC tournament and take on the Augustana Vikings. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m. from Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, S.D.
