Ninth Inning Rally Lifts Huskies to 2-1 Win Over Mankato

A two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted St. Cloud State University baseball to a huge 2-1 victory over top seed Minnesota State, Mankato on Thursday, May 8 at the 2014 NSIC championships in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The victory keeps the Huskies' tournament championship hopes alive as they will now advance to play Winona State, which defeated Southwest Minnesota State tonight by a 4-3 tally. Game time at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 9. The Huskies own a 2-1 tournament record and will need another win on Friday to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament. Of note, Minnesota State ends its run at the NSIC championship with a 1-2 record.
In a classic pitchers' dual, Minnesota State managed to gain a 1-0 lead with their lone run of the game in the fourth inning off of SCSU starter Garrett Harrison, who pitched eight innings and allowed just six hits with six strikeouts to his credit. Harrison's sterling effort set the table for relief ace Reese Gregory, who capped the evening with one inning of work in the ninth inning that also resulted in him gaining his 10th win of the season (10-2 overall).
"Garrett Harrison pitched a fantastic game and he just kept getting stronger as the game progressed," said SCSU assistant coach Rob "Doc" Swendra. "His pitching kept us in the game and allowed us to get the win in the bottom of the ninth."
The spotlight was also directed at Gregory as he was the offensive standout of the game with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning, which brought home the winning run of the game.
Mike Jurgella set the stage in the bottom of the ninth with a one single that kept the Huskies' hopes alive. A pop out to the next Husky batter put two outs on the board for Garrett Fischer, who picked up a walk to put the go ahead run on the bases.
Zak Hoffman tied the game on the next at bat with a single to center field, which scored Jurgella and moved Garrett Fischer to third base. The game was put into the books by Gregory, who rapped a single down the third base line that scored Garrett Fischer and ended Mankato's tournament run.
"Reese (Gregory) came through for us in the clutch big time," SCSU assistant coach Bruce Thompson said. "His ability at the plate and on the mound has really been impressive for us this season, and his game winner tonight just adds another chapter to his success story in 2014."
In the contest, MSU outhit the Huskies 7-5 as both teams did not have an error in the game. SCSU improved to 37-13 with the victory while MSU falls to 41-9 with the loss. In addition, the victory helps keep alive the Huskies' hopes of earning a fifth consecutive NCAA tournament bid. In the latest NCAA DII Central region poll, the Huskies were ranked 7th, while MSU was ranked second.
