Huskies Track & Field opens 2015 with solid outing at the Northwest Open

Minneapolis, Minn. – The St. Cloud State men's and women's track and field team opened the new year at the Northwest Open hosted by the University of Minnesota Saturday afternoon at the U of M Fieldhouse.
Results
Four athletes set NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks in five events durint the meet.
On the women's side, sophomore Patience Yalartai (Bloomington, Minn.) had a solid outing winning the long jump and triple jump, setting provisional qualifying marks in both events. She had a jump of 18-05.00 in the long jump and 38-00.75 in the triple jump.
Sophomore Jasmine Grant (Surrey, Canada) won the 60-meter dash in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8.13. Grant also placed second in the 200 meters in a time of 26.54.
Senior Becky Schmidt (White Bear Lake, Minn.) won the 200 meters in 26.18 and placed second in the long jump with a leap of 18-03.00.
Three men met NCAA provisional marks. First year sprinter Shaheed Hickman (Minneapolis, Minn.) placed second in the 60-meter dash in a provisional time of 6.84.
Sophomore Keyshawn Davis (Milwaukee, Wis.) placed second in the long jump with a leap of 23-03.50, also a provisional mark.
Junior Ryan Johnson (Amery, Wis.) had a pair of top five finishes. He placed second in the weight throw with a provisional throw of 57-02.50. He was fifth in the shot put with a toss of 49-00.25.
First year Isaiah Pitchford (Waukesha, Wis.) placed third in the 400 meters in 49.06.
Head coach Eric Hanenberger was happy with the results from the first competition of the spring semester. "The athletes that competed this weekend did a pretty good job against some stiff competition," said Hanenberger. "Keyshawn Davis and Patience Yalartai had great meets. Overall we had consistent marks for this meet."
The Huskies return to the track next Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Minnesota Open hosted by the University of Minnesota.
