Poster, Goergen win titles at ISU's Nichols Open

The #2 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team opened its 2015-16 season on Sunday, Nov. 15 with an appearance at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open, which was hosted by Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
The Huskies were led at the meet by senior Clint Poster, who earned first place honors at 165-pounds, and junior Austin Goergen, who placed first at 285-pounds. An open meet, no team scores were kep at the Cyclone Open that featured wrestlers from many of the nation's top NCAA Division II and NCAA Division I programs.
Poster won the title at 165 pounds with a 7-6 victory over Tanner Weatherman of Iowa State in the title bout. Poster charted two pins and a technical fall along with a 5-0 record at the Cyclone Open to gain the title. Last year, Poster won the Cyclone Open title at 157-pounds.
Goergen also scored a perfect 5-0 record in Ames with his title run at 285-pounds. In the championship bout, Goergen earned a 5:06 fall against Quean Smith of Iowa State in the championship match. On the way to the title, Goergen gained an amazing five pins including wins over DI rivals Tyler Swope of Iowa State and Jon Scanlan of Iowa State along with a pin over Luke Petersen of Nebraska Kearney. Both Goergen and Poster are currently ranked #1 in the nation's Division II wrestling polls.
At 125-pounds, defending NCAA DII champion Tim Prescott placed second in tournament action. He lost by a fall at 1:45 against Minnesota's Ethan Lizak. Prescott advanced to the finals with wins over Hugo Perez (Midland), Jay Schwarm (Northern Iowa) and Connor Bolling (Nebraska Kearney). SCSU's Tanner Johnshoy also charted a 4-2 record at 125-pounds in tournament action.
At 157-pounds, SCSU's Gabe Fogarty placed second. In the title bout, Fogarty suffered a 5-2 loss to Cody Pack of DI rival South Dakota State. In matches leading up to the championship match, Fogarty gained wins over Jakada Hull (Ellsworth), Tanner Werner (Grand View), Bubba Jaramillo (Nebraska Kearney) and Logan Breitenbach (Iowa State).
At 184-pounds, SCSU's Uthman Rabiu's placed fifth on the power of a 14-8 decision over Josh Casperson of SDSU in the fifth place match. Rabiu opened the tournament with a win over Gustavo Gasca (ICCC), which was followed by a win over Faris Karaborni (Minnesota). In the 184 semi's, Rabiu lost a 5-4- match against Zach Stodden of Nebraska Kearney and lost a 5-2 match against Dane Pestano of Iowa State before ending with the win over Casperson.
