Men's basketball advances with 93-83 win over Southwest Minnesota State

Huskies to play Minnesota State on Sunday, March 1
St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State men's basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament with a 93-83 win over Southwest Minnnesota State University, Wednesday night at Halenbeck Hall.
The Huskies will face Minnesota State University, Mankato on Sunday, March 1 at 2:03 p.m. in the quarterfinals to be played at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Mavericks picked up an 83-52 win over Minnesota Crookston to advance.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 18-11 overall. Southwest Minnesota State ends the season with a 12-17 record.
Four Huskies starters scored in double figures led by junior guard Jordan Poydras (Los Angeles, Calif.) with a game high 25 points. He made four three-point baskets, handed out five assists and had five rebounds.
Three Huskies made four baskets each from beyond the arc. Joining Poydras was sophomore guard Scottie Stone (Melrose, Minn.) and senior forward Connor Niehaus (Fremont, Neb.) with four each.
The two teams battled throughout the game. The Huskies led by as many as 12 points in the first half but a Joey Bartlett layup pulled the Mustangs to withing one, 15-14 six minutes into the game. With just under two minutes left in the half, Bartlett scored another layup to close the score to 44-42. The Huskies scored the next five points to take a 49-43 lead at the half.
St. Cloud State stretched the lead to 19 but the Mustangs didn't give up and closed the game to four points, 83-79 on a Travis Meinders three-point basket. In the final 1:29 Stone made six of eight free throws and junior Donnell Cegers (Milwaukee, Wis.) drained two from the charity stripe to secure the win.
Huskies Tip-Ins
Stone finished the night with 25 points and was nine of 12 from the free throw line.
Niehaus and senior center James Fort (South Haven, Minn.) each scored 14 points. Fort led all players with eight rebounds and blocked three shots. He was six of seven from the field.
Cegers finished the game with ten points and five rebounds.
The Huskies shot 57.1 percent from the field and made 12 three-point baskets.

Travis Meinders and Joey Bartlett led the Mustangs in scoring with 19 points each. Meinders made four from beyond the arc and Barlett knocked down three three's. Meinders and Turner Moen each had four assists.
MJ Delmore added 12 points and three assists.
Moen and Mitch Weg each had six rebounds to five the Mustangs a 32-31 edge in rebounding.
SMSU shot 52.7 percent from the field and 56.3 percent from three-point range.
