Men's and women's track and field complete first day of NSIC/U.S. Bank Indoor Championships in seventh place

Mankato, Minn. – St. Cloud State junior Stephanie Waletzko (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral High School) set a school record and both the men's and women's teams are in seventh place after the first day of the 2015 NSIC/U.S. Bank Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of Minnesota State University.
Waletzko smashed the school record in the weight throw with a toss of 53-7.00 in the prelims. She broke the old record of 51-10.50 set by Amanda Kunkel in 2008. Waletzko placed 12th in the finals later in the day.
After the first day both the men's and women's teams sit in seventh place. Through seven events the women have tallied 21 points. Augustana College is the frontrunner with 47 points.
The men's team has accumulated 14 points through six events. Minnesota State University is the men's leader with 45 points.
"Today was a very good day," said head coach Eric Hanenberger. "We had some very good surprises. I am very happy for Steph Waletzko who shattered the school record in the weight throw. She is a tireless worker and is reaping the benefits of her dedication and hard work."
The Huskies return to the track on Friday at 10 a.m. for the start of the field events. The running events are scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.

Women's results:
In the women's long jump finals the Huskies had a two, three finish as senior Becky Schmidt (White Bear Lake, Minn.) placed second with a mark of 19-00.75 and sophomore Patience Yalartai (Bloomington, Minn.) was third with a jump of 18-11.25.
In the finals, the women's distance medley of Kaylee Roelike (Freeport, Minn.), Emily Yeager, Natalie Gottschalk (Waukesha, Wis.) and Rachel Sakry (Milnor, N.D.) placed tenth in a time of 12:59.17.
In another final, sophomore Sam Sunstrom (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) placed 11th in the women's 3000 meters in her time of 10:30.32.
In prelim races, sophomore Jasmine Grant (Surrey, Canada) advanced to the 400 meter run finals with her time of 58.68.
Becky Schmidt ran the 60 meter dash in 7.73 to advance the finals. Her time was an NCAA Division II provisional mark. Schmidt also advances to the finals in 200 meter dash with a prelim time of 25.54.

Sophomore Keyshawn Davis (Milwaukee, Wis.) placed second in the finals of the men's long jump with a mark of 23-05.50.
Junior Ryan Johnson (Amery, Wis.) placed fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 59-04.25.
Men's distance medley of Sowada, Richard Carr (Forest Lake, Minn.) , Paul Greenwood (Delano, Minn.) and Chris Caron (Ham Lake, Minn.) placed eighth in 10:49.39.
In first day prelims, first-year Sebastian Sowada (Little Falls, Minn.) advanced to the finals in the mile run with a time of 4:32.43.
In the 400 meter run, sophomore JoVonte Suber St. Louis, Mo.) (49.63) and first-year Isaiah Pitchford (Waukesha, Wis.) (50.70) advanced to Friday's finals.
First-year Shaheed Hickman (Minneapolis, Minn.) ran the 60 meter dash in 6.91 putting him in the finals on Friday.
