ST. CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY – TEAM CHAMPIONS
Steve Costanzo - Austin Goergen - Tim Prescott
Coach Steve Costanzo
What a special weekend we had and we only brought six guys into this tournament. As a coach and spokesperson of our coaching staff, we are very proud of our team right now.
Tim and Austin... talk about what it means to be part of the first national championship team at St. Cloud State University.
Goergen
The first thing Steve said is you guys do not know how special of a team we have. It feels great to be a part of the first national team ever here at St. Cloud State. It is crazy coming here with six people. As Coach was saying we had to be flawless. Actually we wrestled better than our best. We plan on doing it again next year.
Prescott
The emotions throughout the last couple days and at times having great success, you watched your teammates battle back, talk about the emotions.
Goergen
He said you guys need to dig deep and dig down inside.
Costanzo
It is hard to put everything into words just because we were probably not one of the favorites to win this tournament. I know a lot of people said it to me over the past couple days. We came through and it is because these guys obviously came together. We have had teams in the past at St. Cloud State that have been so close and I think that was the biggest difference.
Has it sunk in yet that you're national champs?'
Goergen
It just feels unreal. Everyone can say you are Division II National Champs. Just like Tim said here. I'm just glad to have the coaching staff that we do. There's no one else in the country that has better coaches than we have.
Costanzo
It's obviously very special. I hope that this opens up a new era at St. Cloud State. I knew coming into St. Cloud State nine years ago that we could win a national championship. Kind of like our program. Every other year we have a national champ.
Talk about Tim's performance and winning a national championship this weekend.
Costanzo
It was definitely one of our catalysts this weekend and it showed a lot of grit and fight. He had the right to be here, you could see it in his eyes that he was confident. His body language showed a lot of positive things.. It's pretty special.
Goergen
I knew going into my match that we obviously had the national championship wrapped up. I knew that all I had to do was wrestle how I wanted to wrestle. I am disappointed with second. I can't hang my head too low. Winning it this year would've been nice, but on the other hand it just makes me want it more.
125 CHAMPION – TIM PRESCOTT – ST. CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY
Opening Statement
I want to thank everyone that supported me all this way and thank God for my abilities being able to wrestle this season.
Tim, your win sealed the deal for team. Talk about your personal aspirations and helping out the team.
It's an honor to be a part of this team, the reason why I came to this team is because they've been in the runinng almost every year and kept falling short. I find myself with my career the same way... I fell short quite a bit, right near that title every time. I knew they were going to be just as hungry as I am, pushing each other to the top. Just to be a part of sealing the deal for the team is phenomenal, I'm speechless. It's great.
What was going through your head?
It was unreal. All this hard work throughout the season, all the heartbreak, blood, sweat and tears throughout the year, the injuries...it was all worth it. When that clock hit zero, it was a big relief.
How tough of a match was it for you? You've seen him several times this year... talk how hard it was to wrestle him in the finals.
I knew going into the match, I'd have my hands full. He gave me two losses throughout the year, and at regionals two weeks ago. I knew what he had and I knew what I could do. I worked with coach throughout the past couple weeks... going in and taking care of business. I just ending up coming out on top. There's not much else to say about that. I mean, great opponent, very tough kid, doesn't stop, keeps attacking, you know, he brings the best out of me.
