Rafael Saez Leads Track and Field Team at Drake Alternative Meet

Rafael Saez led St. Cloud State at the Drake Alternative meet with two first place finishes on April 25, in St. Peter, Minn.

Saez improved his 15.46m seed throw in shot-put to 15.77m (51-09.00) to take the gold. He was followed by sophomore, Quinn Anderson, who claimed eight place with a 14.79m (48-06.25) throw, and freshman, Curtwan Evans, who was right behind in ninth with a final throw of 14.77m (48-05.50).Â

His second win of the meet came in discuss, where he threw a final of 49.58m (162-08). Fellow junior, Ryan Johnson, also competed in the event and placed in fifth with a throw of 46.60m (152-11). Johnson also took sixth in the hammer throw event with a 55.64m (182-06) final throw.

The women also enjoyed success in the field, where Heather Clankie and Cassanadra Cardinal placed back to back in the discuss throw. Clankie's 41.90m (137-06) throw landed her third place, while Cardinal took fourth with a 41.49m (135-09) throw.

Ashley Ritter and Stephanie Waletzko also took back-to-back places in the hammer throw. A throw of 49.50m (162-05) put Ritter in fifth place, and Waletzko took sixth, throwing 49.37m (162-00).

On the men's side, there was two top ten finishes in the 5000-meter run. John Simila placed eighth with a finishing time of 16:27.63 and Tom Mountain followed, placing 10th with a time of 16:44.22.

Sebastian Sowada found the podium in the 1500 meter run with a final time of 4:04.42. Teammates Chris Caron and Paul Greenwood finishes behind, with Caron's time of 4:05.78 taking sixth and Greenwood taking 10th with a final of 4:09.35.

Mathew Massmann was the lone competitor in 3000-meter steeplechase, running it in 10:30.55, and claiming seventh place.

Myles Witcher represented St. Cloud in the 110-meter hurdles, gaining sixth place with a time of 16.51.

The women had similar results, as Jessie Hubley placed eighth in the 5000 m run, completing it in 20:23.94.
