St. Cloud State Baseball wins 2015 NSIC regular season title

The #1 St. Cloud State University baseball team captured first place in the 2015 NSIC regular season standings thanks to a two-game sweep at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. on May 2. Â The Huskies won the first game by a 4-0 margin and then charted a 7-5 victory in game two to clinch the title.
SCSU ended its regular season schedule with a 47-3 overall record and a 31-3 NSIC record. Â The Huskies claimed the top spot in the league by themselves since Minnesota State lost a game against Winona State on May 2 and and ended with a 30-4 NSIC record this spring.
The Huskies will now advance to play Northern State in the first round of the NSIC tournament on Wednesday, May 6 at 11 a.m. at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. Â The double-elimination NSIC tournament will continue through Saturday, May 9 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
In game one on May 2, SCSU scored two runs in the third period to gain control of the game. Â The Huskies added one run apiece in the sixth and seventh inning to ice the game at 4-0. Â SCSU was outhit by the Wolves 7-5 in the contest.
Sheldon Miks was the pitcher of record for SCSU with seven hits allowed and five strikeouts in the complete game shutout. Â Miks is now 9-0 on the season with three shutouts and a 1.04 ERA this spring.
At the plate, SCSU was led by Zak Hoffman with two hits while Reese Gregory charted his fourth homer of the season in the game. Zach Hoffmann also had one hit, one run and one RBI in the game for SCSU.
In game two, SCSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and then stretched its lead to 4-0 with one run in the second and two runs in the third. Â In the fourth inning, the Huskies added one more run before NSU rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-2. Â NSU scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning before SCSU sealed the win with two more runs in the top of the seventh to make it 7-3. Â NSU came back with runs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to make the final 7-5.
SCSU outhit NSU 13-10 in the contest. Â Logan Spitzack improved to 5-0 on the season with the pitching decision for SCSU. Â He went 6.0 innings with two strikeouts and seven hits allowed. Â Relief work in the game was provided by Ryan Diers and Gregory, who earned his sixth save of the year after closing the game in the final two innings.
Karl Sorensen led SCSU on offense with four hits, three RBIs, two runs and one home run in the game. Â Eric Loxtercamp added three hits and two runs in the game and Zach Hoffmann had two hits and two runs for the Huskies.
