Miks with complete game two-hit shutout
The #1 nationally ranked St. Cloud State University baseball team set a new team record by charting its 49th victory of the season with a 3-0 shutout over Minnesota Duluth in action at the 2015 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Thursday, May 7.
The win moves SCSU's record to 49-3 and beats the old record for most wins in a season set in 2012 by the Huskies at 48-12. The victory also sets up a meeting in the tournament winners bracket against #3 seed Augustana College (36-15), which earned a 4-2 win over #2 seed Minnesota State on May 7. SCSU is the number one seed in the tournament. SCSU and Augustana will play each other at Noon on Friday, May 9 at Karras Park's Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, S.D.
St. Cloud State earned the victory over UMD with a sterling pitching effort by freshman lefthander Sheldon Miks. In the complete game victory, Miks allowed just two hits and struck out nine batters in the game for the Huskies. Miks only had 102 pitches in the game, allowed no walks and did not allow a runner to advance past first base in the game.
"Sheldon Miks had an unbelievable game for us," SCSU coach Pat Dolan said. "He had a complete game and really shutdown UMD's offense throughout the afternoon. We needed that kind of pitching effort from him because UMD played one heck of a game too on defense. Fortunately, we had a nice team effort on offense to get some big insurance runs in the eighth inning."
In the first inning, SCSU's Zach Hoffmann carded the game winning run with an RBI single to centerfield that scored Eric Loxtercamp. UMD's A. Vaske turned in a quality pitching performance as he shutout the Huskies until the bottom of the eighth inning.
In the eighth inning, SCSU's Beau Fandel singled to right field and an error on the play allowed Karl Sorensen to score on the play. Fandel also advanced to third and then scored on a follow-up single by Zak Hoffman to make the final tally 3-0. In the contest, SCSU outhit the Bulldogs 11-2.
The double-elimination NSIC tournament will continue with games through May 9 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Last night, Wayne State and Concordia-St. Paul were both eliminated from tournament play with their second losses. In the evening games on May 8, Minnesota Duluth will play Winona State while Northern State will face Minnesota State. The losers of those two games will be eliminated from tourney play, while the winners will advance to play on Friday, May 9.
