#1 St. Cloud State advances to NSIC tournament title game with 5-0 win on May 8

The #1 nationally ranked St. Cloud State University baseball team (50-3) will play for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament championship on Saturday, May 8. The Huskies gained entry to the title match thanks to a 5-0 shutout win over host Augustana College (36-16) on Friday, May 7 at Karras Park's Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The victory was SCSU's second consecutive shutout performance in tournament play and it also allowed the Huskies to hit the 50-win plateau for the first time in school history.
SCSU will now advance to the NSIC tournament title game, which will take place at Noon on Saturday, May 8 at Karras Park's Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Huskies' opponent in the game will be the winner of tonight's elimination game between Augustana and the victor of the afternoon game on May 8 between Northern State and Minnesota Duluth. If SCSU wins the first game on May 9, the tournament will be completed. If SCSU falls in the first game on May 9, a second championship game between the two teams will be played immediately after the conclusion of the first game on May 9.
SCSU relied upon another stellar pitching performace to gain the victory over Augie on May 8. Junior Garrett Harrison improved to 8-0 on the season with his six-hit shutout against the Vikings. Harrison faced 33 batters in the contest and notched nine strikeouts during the game. SCSU managed to outhit the Vikings 8-6 in the contest.
SCSU scored three runs in the third inning when the Huskies' Kyle Lieser took advantage of a throwing error to score the first run. A single by Mike Jurgella brought home Eric Loxtercamp to make it 2-0 and then Brandon Arnold scored on an RBI ground out to shortstop by Karl Sorensen.
The Huskies iced the contest with two more runs in the seventh when Arnold pounded out a home run that scored pinch Jackson Goplen on the play. This was Arnold's fifth home run of the season. The shot also tied the team record for most home runs in a season at 58 for the Huskies. The previous mark of 58 homers was set during the 2010 season.
On the topic of broken records, SCSU also set a new team season record during the game as the Huskies now have 656 hits this season. The old record of 653 hits was also set during the 2010 season.
