Huskies men win two titles in first day of NSIC/U.S. Bank Track & Field Championships

Men second, women seventh after day one
Sioux Falls, S.D. – The St. Cloud State men's track and field team collected two individual titles are in second place after the first day of the 2015 NSIC/U.S. Bank Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by the University of Sioux Falls. The St. Cloud State women are in seventh place in the team standings.

Sophomore Keyshawn Davis (Milwaukee, Wis.) won his second straight long jump title with a leap of 7.39 meters and improved his NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark. Junior Rafael Saez (Milwaukee, Wis.) won the discus with a toss of 171-00 (52.12 meters) and also improved on his NCAA qualifying mark. Junior Ryan Johnson (Amery, Wis.) added points in the discus with his fifth place finish on a throw of 161-01.
The men's squad also gained points in the pole vault as first year Marcus Welk (Fargo, N.D.) placed fourth at a height of 4.55 meters.
First-year Sebastian Sowada (Little Falls, Minn.), sophomore JoVonte Suber (St. Louis, Mo.) and first-year JT Butler (Montgomery, Minn.) advanced to Saturday's finals in four events. Sowada placed ninth in the prelims of the 1500 meters in a time of 4:01.01. Suber advanced to the 400 meter finals, finishing fifth in 49.12. Butler advanced in the 100 and 200 meter dash. He placed sixth in qualifying in the 100 meters in a time of 10.59. He was seventh in the 200 meters in 21.73.
On the women's side, the Huskies had three athletes score points in the long jump. Senior Becky Schmidt (White Bear Lake, Minn.) placed second with a leap of 5.87 meters and improved on her NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark. Sophomore Patience Yalartai (Bloomington, Minn.) placed fifth with a mark of 5.61 improving her provisional mark and first-year Natalie Gottschalk (Waukesha, Wis.) placed seventh with a mark of 5.58 meters.
Schmidt advanced to the finals in the 100 meter dash placing fourth in the prelims in a time of 11.99.
The men's squad posted 40 points and trail Minnesota State University, Mankato with 46.5 points. The women collected 21 points that included 14 points in the long jump.
The NSIC/U.S. Bank Championships continue on Saturday with field events slated to begin at 11 a.m. followed by the running events at 1 p.m. Live results and video of the championships can be viewed at www.northernsun.org
