SAUK RAPIDS, Minn. – Senior Sam Sunstrom won her second race of the season in earning the victory at the Bob Waxlax Invitational in the home hosted cross country meet from Wapicada Golf Course in Sauk Rapids, Minn. on Friday evening, Oct. 7.
Sunstrom had a season-best time of 21:48.1 to take the victory by 25 seconds over Sasha Hovind – who ran unattached - and 41 seconds ahead of Hannah Palmeter, who officially placed second, of Southwest Minnesota State.
Sunstorm started her 2016 campaign with an event victory at the UWRF Falcon Invitational. She has placed in the top 10 in four races this season for SCSU.
The Huskies were able to place four runners in the top 20 plus six in the top 30 in the competition of 62 runners.
Freshman Chrissy Lofgren finished 10th with her time of 23:06.5. Senior Rachel Sakry earned 18th with her time of 23:43.4. Freshman Autumn Shurbert-Hetzel was 19th with a 23:44.3. Senior Kaylee Roelike earned 24th with a 24:23.7. Junior Zia Matti earned 26th with a 24:25.3 Junior McKenzie Holt finished 31st with a 24:57.8.
The Huskies, as a team, finished as the runner-up at the women's meet with 72 points and an average time of 23:22. Winona State won the women's race in the Bob Waxlax Invitational with their 31 points and average time of 22:53. Minnesota State was crowned the men's champion with 35 points and an average time of 26:38. Seth Reel of Winona State was the individual winner for the men with his time of 25:31.3.
Next, SCSU heads off to the 2016 NSIC Cross Country Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D. at Yankton Trail Park on Oct. 22.
