Sam Sunstrom Places Seventh At The NCAA Division II Cross Country Central Regional To Qualify For Nationals

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Senior Sam Sunstrom placed seventh overall at the NCAA Division II Central Regional in Sioux Falls, S.D. at the Yankton Trail Park on Saturday morning, Nov. 5 to earn a place in nationals.
Sunstrom's seventh place finish was the best of her career. She had a time of 20:47.24 and was among the three top runners at the regional meet that was not part of one of the three automatic qualifying teams (University of Mary, Minnesota Duluth and Southwest Baptist) to earn a place in nationals for the first time in her career.
University of Mary both won the race with 60 points and an average time of 20:51.12 and also had the individual winner in Alexis Zeis. Minnesota Duluth placed second in the meet with 94 points and an average time of 21:08.00. They also had the runner up at the meet in Emilee Trost. Southwest Baptist was the third team that qualified with 121 points and an average of 21:35.67.
The Huskies had a strong performance by all seven runners and ranked 12th overall with 334 points and an average time of 22:27.61.
The program put a total of four runners in the top 100 with freshman Chrissy Lofgren placing 56th with her time of 22:20.37, senior Kaylee Roelike earning 74th with a 22:39.21 and fellow senior Rachel Sakry earned 85th with a 23:53.07. SCSU also had three more runners that placed among the top 142 of the 211 runners that competed. Junior Zia Matti placed 118th with 23:37.13, freshman Autumn Shurbert-Hetzel finishing 124th and junior McKenzie Holt earned 141st with a 24:14.09.
Next, Sunstorm continues her season and competes at the NCAA DII National Cross Country Championships held on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Abbey Course in St. Leo, Florida
