Freshman goaltender and sophomore forward win Defensive and Offensive awards, respectively
ST. CLOUD—After leading the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (6-14-2, 4-11-1-1 WCHA) to an unbeaten weekend against then-No. 7-ranked Colgate, sophomore forward Hannah Potrykus and freshman goaltender Janine Alder have been named WCHA Offensive and Defensive Player of the week, respectively, for January 6-8, the league announced Tuesday.
This marks the first time multiple SCSU players have won WCHA awards in the same week since Julia Gilbert and Julie Friend were named Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, on Nov. 14, 2012.
This is Alder's first Defensive Player of the Week win and first for a St. Cloud State player since defenseman Lexi Slattery won on Jan. 12, 2016. Alder stopped all 57 shots she faced in the upset win and tie against the Raiders. The Zurich, Switzerland native recorded her third shutout of the season in Saturday's 0-0 draw and came off the bench midway through Friday's 7-4 victory to notch her sixth win of the season.
"I always try to be calm and confident in the net," Alder said. "I want to give confidence to all of the players in front of me."
Potrykus's Offensive Player of the Week award is the first WCHA weekly honor of her career. Playing her first game since November 19 due to injury, the Brighton, Mich., native powered Friday's win with a hat trick and four points—the latter of which tied for the most scored in the WCHA this past weekend.
Her three-goal performance was the Huskies' first since Molly Illikainen's on Oct. 24, 2015 against North Dakota.
"It felt good to get back on the ice and be back with the team," Potrykus said. "There was a lot of built up tension from my injury and I just wanted to get back out there."
The last SCSU player to be named Offensive Player of the Week was Illikainen on Nov. 24, 2015.
These are the third and fourth conference weekly honors for the Huskies this season. Alder previously won WCHA Rookie of the Week for games played October 7-8 and October 21-23.
Alder, Potrykus and St. Cloud State return to action this weekend on the road against top-ranked Wisconsin. Game time is 7 p.m. on Friday, January 13 at LaBahn Arena and 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 14 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
