Freshman forward notched one goal and three points against Minnesota State
ST. CLOUD—For helping power the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (7-16-3, 5-13-2 WCHA) to a five-point weekend against Minnesota State, freshman forward Kayla Friesen has been named the WCHA's Rookie of the Week for January 20-22, the conference announced Tuesday.
The Winnipeg, Manitoba native tied for the Huskies' team lead and paced all conference rookies with three points (1+2) last weekend in SCSU's 2-1 win and 3-3 tie against the Mavericks. Her three-point series was Friesen's best in league play and equaled for her best weekend of the season, matching her three-point (1+2) output November 25-26 at the Windjammer Classic in Burlington, Vt.
Friesen has been an offensive revelation in her rookie campaign. She is tied for third on the team, and for seventh among league freshmen, with 11 points (5+6) in 26 games. Her five goals are tied for fifth among WCHA first-year players. Good things tend to happen for the Huskies when Friesen records a point. They are unbeaten in five of eight games (3-3-2) when she does so.
This is Friesen's first career WCHA weekly honor. She is the second Husky to garner Rookie of the Week accolades this season, following freshman goaltender Janine Alder, who previously won the award on October 11 and October 25.
St. Cloud State returns to action Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28 against No. 4 Minnesota at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Game time is 7:07 p.m. on Friday and 3:07 p.m. on Saturday. All youth under 18 and SCSU students with a valid university ID will be admitted for free. Tickets for the series can be purchased at scsutickets.com
