#2 St. Cloud State gains weekend sweep with 5-0 win on Nov. 4

The #2 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (7-0-0, 2-0-0 NCHC) completed a weekend sweep with a 5-0 shutout win over #8 Minnesota Duluth (4-4-2, 0-2-0 NCHC) on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The sweep gave the Huskies two wins in their first weekend of league play in 2017-18 and it also marks the first time since 2001-02 that SCSU has won seven consecutive games to start its season. Of note, the Huskies went 9-0-0 to open the 2001-02 season.
The shutout was the first in the college career of rookie netminder David Hrenak, who made 29 saves in the game. He is now 3-0-0 on the season with a stellar 1.65 goals against average and a .946 save rate.
On offense, the Huskies' Jacob Benson earned the game winner at 9:49 of the first period with his power play marker, which included assists from Blake Winiecki and Mikey Eyssimont. The goal was Benson's fourth of the season and it was also Winiecki's first point of the 2017-18 season.
Eyssimont added SCSU's second power play goal of the day at 18:50. Benson and Jack Ahcan each had assists on the play, which was Eyssimont's second goal of 2017-18. Eyssimont now has 30 goals, 40 assists and 70 points in his career with the Huskies.
In the second period, the Huskies extended their lead to 3-0 with their first shorthanded goal of the campaign. Robby Jackson stepped into the spotlight with a steal near center ice that resulted in the SHG at 10:57. This was Jackson's fourth goal of the year and his fourth career SHG.
At 13:16 of the second, Winiecki made it 4-0 with his goal that included assists from Will Borgen and Patrick Newell. The goal was Winiecki's 30th career marker at SCSU.
SCSU wrapped up the scoring in the second period with Jack Poehling's fifth goal of the season at 17:37. Ahcan and Newell added assists on the play, which finished the day's tally at 5-0.
This marked SCSU's second shutout of the season and it also marked the Huskies' first sweep over the Bulldogs in St. Cloud since a pair of wins on Feb. 14-15, 2014.
On the day, SCSU was 2-3 on the power play and it was perfect on the penalty kill at 6-6. Hrenak made 29 saves to earn the win, while Hunter Shepherd started the game for UMD with 11 saves and Nick Deery finished with 10 saves in 26:44 of play. UMD held a 29-26 edge in shots on goal during the contest.
