FAYTETTE, Iowa – In a weekend full of schedule changes due to weather, the St. Cloud State baseball team (7-5, 0-0 NSIC) kicked off their conference season against the Upper Iowa Peacocks at 3:00 PM on Sunday, Mar. 18. The Huskies were originally scheduled to play a double-header beginning at noon. However, the infield was still covered in frost and the game was restructured into a single nine-inning game to begin at 3:00 PM.
SUMMARY OF INNINGS 1-11
In the conference opener, St. Cloud State jumped out to a four-run lead in the fourth inning after Jordan Joseph extended the Huskies 1-0 lead to five after sending a three-run homerun to left field.
The Huskies led 5-0 until the Peacocks scored three runs on four hits in the fifth. A pinch-hit homerun that led off the sixth inning brought the Huskies' lead to one before the Peacocks eventually tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. A lead-off single sparked the rally before a sac-bunt advanced the tying run to second. Following the bunt, a stolen base and fielder's interference call would eventually push across the game-tying run.
In the first eleven innings of play, St. Cloud State stranded nine runners and totaled eight hits as a team. Jordan Joseph paced the Huskies' offensive efforts with two hits, two runs and three RBI's along with his first homerun of the season in the fourth inning.
Dominic Austing started the game for SCSU and struck out two over four innings while surrendering six hits.
Junior, Zach Siggelkow relieved Austing in the fifth, striking out three and allowing one hit.
In relief for Siggelkow was freshman, Matthew Osterberg. Osterberg went three innings and only surrendered one earned run on two hits.
Nathan Strobel entered the game in the ninth inning and was lights out in his extended appearance into the late innings of today's game. Strobel went three innings and allowed one run in three hits.
GAME DETAILS FOR MONDAY
Sunday's game will resume in the top of the 12th inning on Monday, March 19th at 12 noon. Two seven-inning games will follow the completion of the suspended game.
LOCATION CHANGE FOR MONDAY
The games will be moved from the campus of Upper Iowa University to the campus of Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mount Mercy features an all-turf field that will be suitable for the weather conditions that come with playing baseball outdoors in the Midwest during the early spring months.
