Castro earns first team recognition, Brassfield named to the second team
BURNSVILLE, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball had two student-athletes named to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) honors, as the league announced their season awards on Tuesday. Junior Wilmis Castro (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) earned first team honors while senior Bryce Brassfield (Gilbert, Ariz.) earned second team honors.
Castro was named to the All-NSIC First Team after earning second team honors last season, while Brassfield earned all-conference honors for the first time in his career.
Castro has been an extra base machine in the middle of the Huskies order since joining last season, following up a 29 extra base performance last season with 32 this season. Castro hit .378 with a 1.178 OPS, 12 home runs, 16 doubles, four triples, 42 RBI and 39 runs scored. He led the Huskies in each of those offensive categories and ranks among the conference's top-10 in triples (first), batting average (second), slugging percentage (.727, second), hits (65, third), OPS (fourth), doubles (fourth) and home runs (eighth). His 32 extra base hits are the eight-most in a single season in program history while his .727 slugging percentage ranks 10th. Among program career records, Castro's 23 home runs rank ninth all-time.
Brassfield was a workhouse on the mound for the Huskies this season, starting 11 games and appearing in 12 with a 3-5 record, 4.57 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and NSIC-leading 81 strikeouts. He logged six or more innings in six of his 11 starts, throwing complete games in victories over Northern State (Feb. 26) and Minnesota Crookston (April 8). The Husky senior struck out six or more batters in eight of his 11 starts, including a season-high 11 against Crookston on April 8. The 11 strikeouts were the sixth-most in a single game by an NSIC pitcher this season, while his 81 strikeouts are the ninth-most by an SCSU pitcher in a season.
