1962-63 Wrestling Team

The 1962-63 wrestling team recorded one of the best finishes in the history of SCSU team sports by placing third at the 1963 NAIA National Wrestling Championships. That year, the team recorded an 8-3-1 season after starting the year with losses in their first two matches. The Huskies went on to win the Northern State College Conference wrestling championship and advanced to the NAIA National Championships. At the NAIA Tournament, SCSU placed third in the team standings and three wrestlers brought home national titles: freshman James Hazewinkel at 115 pounds, senior co-captain Grant Nelson at 147 pounds, and junior Gary Smith at 190 pounds. In addition, Delroy Miller placed fifth at 157 pounds and Kenneth Ebert placed sixth at 177 pounds. Head coach Willis Wood was runner-up for NAIA Coach of the Year honors. Team members include David Birr, Ken Ebert, Tom Eitter, Pete Elam, Jerry Hanson, Dave Hazewinkel, Jim Hazewinkel, Phil Jandl, Jim Jurek, Larry Lamke, Delroy Miller, Gary Nelson, Grant Nelson, Rich Peterson, Daniel Pratt, Monty Sinner, Gary Smith, Don Walter, Les Wolff and Coach Willis Wood.
