Butch Raymond marched the sideline at Halenbeck Hall for 13 seasons from 1984 to 1997 as the St. Cloud State University men's basketball coach. When he left to become an athletics administrator, he left behind an unprecedented era in Husky basketball, leading the Huskies to three straight North Central Conference titles. In his 13 seasons with the Huskies, Raymond compiled a 231-142 won/loss record, the most wins of any coach in University history, working the hard court for 13 seasons. He guided the Huskies to the triple crown of Husky basketball, winning North Central Conference titles in 1986, 1987, and 1988. In 25 years as a collegiate coach, he had complied an impressive 449-300 record, which, at the time, ranked him among the top 20 active NCAA Division II coaches for most career wins. In 1984 Raymond, the 11th head coach in the history of the program, inherited a team, that had posted a 4-24 record during the previous season. In his first season he guided the Huskies to a 15-13 record. Four times he led the Huskies to 20-plus win season and the NCAA Regional tournament. In 1987, St. Cloud State advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Raymond coached 18 players to All-Conference status and three of his players were named league MVP - Kevin Catron in 1986, Reggie Perkins in 1987 and 1988, and Joel McDonald in 1995. Raymond is a two-time North Central Conference Coach of the Year (1986 and 1987) and two-time Kodak District Coaches of the Year. In 1994, Raymond received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Minnesota State High School Athletic Directors Association. He is a member of the Minnesota State University, Mankato Hall of Fame. A native of Jasper, Minn., Raymond served as the Commissioner of the Northern Sun Conference from 2004-14 and now resides with his wife in St. Cloud, Minn.
