A 1962 graduate of SCSU, Carruth earned varsity letters at SCSU in baseball and basketball. He set the Eastman Hall basketball's scoring record with 37 points. He also earned distinction by receiving the Turkey Neck Award! Carruth has taught at both Bloomington Kennedy and Bloomington Lincoln High Schools as well as Penn Junior High School. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he has coached soccer and basketball in Bloomington as well as baseball at Minnetonka High School. In 1975 he was honored with the outstanding service award for coaching in the Bloomington Schools. An avid athlete, he has run the Boston, Grandma's, and Twin Cities marathons.
