Greg Thayer attended SCSU on a football scholarship and in his freshman year received the John Weiner Award for Outstanding Freshman Football Player. He went on to quarterback the Huskies to a conference championship in 1970. During the spring season, Thayer pitched the Husky baseball team to three conference championships. He was also named to the all-conference team as an outfielder in 1971. Following this junior year at SCSU, Thayer signed a pro contract and played professional baseball for 10 years, including a season with the Minnesota Twins. Thayer received a degree in marketing in 1976.
