From Annandale, MN, started wrestling in 6th grade at Bendix Elementary in Annandale. During his high school years at Annandale High School from 1976-1981, he was involved in football, cross-country, wrestling and track & field. Attending SCSU in 1981-1987, he wrestled for 5 years until 1986. He held 123-19-0, most career wins, dual meet record 49-2-0, three NCC conference titles (first to do so), three-time All-American, four-year Letter Winner, three-time captain, and MVP in all four years of competition. His coaching experience includes: freestyle wrestling coach in Monticello in 1985; 8th grade football coach, assistant wrestling coach, assistant track & field coach at Sartell High School in 1986-1987; head wrestling coach at Sartell High School in 1987-1991; 7th grade football coach at Annandale High School in 1991; assistant wrestling coach at Annandale High School in 1991-1993. He brought Sartell's 8th grade football team to an undefeated season and coached a track & field triple jumper to the state meet. Seven of the 12 wrestlers he coached to the state placed in the top 6 in 1991-1997. John was the Section 5A Assistant Coach of the Year in 1993. In 1986-1998, he was the MSHL wrestling official. He officiated two State tournaments in 1996 & 1997. Having started his own contracting business, John still enjoys coaching the most. He has been volunteering for college and elementary wrestling and will continue to volunteer. Besides his numerous contributions to charities, he is also the hospitality minister at the Newman Center and St. Ignatius in Annandale.
