Steve Johnson earned a biology degree in 1977 and returned in 1985 to receive a later of science degree in physical education. Johnson holds numerous honors in track and field. He was a three-time national championship finalist between 1975 to 1977, the NIC champion for the mile run in 1976, and a NCAA Division II All-American in the 1,500 meter run in 1976. Johnson holds the SCSU record for the 1,500-meter run and the 4x mile relay. Since leaving SCSU, Johnson has coached men's and women's track and field and cross country at Oregon State, SCSU, Iowa Wesleyan and is presently head coach and an assistant professor at Wartburg College.
