Women's Hockey: Buckeyes Spoil Huskies' Home Opener

St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud State women's hockey team fell in game one of their series home opener Friday to the #10 Ohio State Buckeyes 3-2. The Huskies drop their record to 2-6-1 overall, 2-5-0 in the WCHA. The Buckeyes improve their record to 8-3-0 overall, 6-3-0 in the WCHA.
It was not the start St. Cloud State was looking for when OSU's Kari Schmitt put one past SCSU's Julie Friend (Minnetonka, Minn.) 22 seconds into the game.
The Buckeyes were able to get another one off taking a 2-0 lead over the Huskies at the 10:03 mark in the first period. OSU's Taylor Kuehl scored the goal, making it her ninth of the season.
In the second period it was the Huskies chance to score as Molli Mott (Colorado Springs, Colo.) fired one off on a power-play making it a 2-1 game at the 2:07 mark in the second period. Assists were charted to Haylea Schmid (Oak Grove, Minn.) and Alex Nelson (Andover, Minn.). In the second period, St. Cloud State went 1-for-2 on the power-play as OSU went 0-of-1.
St. Cloud State pounded one more goal away by Ellie Sitek (Edina, Minn.) early in the third period tying the game up 2-2. Sitek was assisted by Audrey Hanmer (Wyoming, Minn.) and Amy Olson (Roseau, Minn.) on the goal. This was Sitek's first goal of the season. Ohio State found the net one more time at the 8:48 mark of the third period taking a 3-2 lead over the Huskies.
In total, OSU outshot the Huskies 35-28 in the game. SCSU's Julie Friend recorded 32 saves and moves her record to 1-3-1 with the loss, while OSU's Chelsea Knapp improves her record to 8-3-0.
St. Cloud State and Ohio State will continue with game two of the series in St. Cloud on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the National Hockey and Event Center. The start time is slated for 2:07 p.m. Will You Be There?
