Huskies Lose In Third Period to the Mavericks

St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud State women's hockey team came back to the National Hockey & Event Center Friday to host Minnesota State University, Mankato after being on the road for the last two weeks. The Huskies lost a close one to the Mavericks 2-1 in game one of a two game series.
The Huskies were off to a great start as junior Molli Mott was able to get one into a tight opening on the right side of the net during a power-play advantage at the 18:48 mark of the first period. Seniors Alex Nelson and Haylea Schmid were charted with the assists on the goal. SCSU outshot the Mavericks by a margin of 12-8 in the first period.
MSU outshot the Huskies in the second period only by one with an 8-7 margin.
St. Cloud State held onto the 1-0 lead until midway through the third period when the Mavericks' Shelby Moteyunas shot from just in front of the blue line and past Julie Friend in the net for the Huskies. Moteyunas tied the game up 1-1 with the help of Kelsie Scott and Kari Lundberg. The Huskies were just not able to come back after the goal and allowed MSU's Lauren Smith to score just three minutes later to take a 2-1 lead.
The Huskies outshot the Mavericks 31-25 in the game and went one-for-three on power-play advantages.
Sophomore Julie Friend was in the net for the Huskies recording 23 saves, while MSU's Danielle Butters totaled 30 saves. Friend moves her record to 3-6-1 on the season.
St. Cloud State and the Minnesota State will return to action Saturday for game two of the WCHA series at the National Hockey & Event Center. The drop of the puck is set for 2:07 p.m.
