Colorado Springs, Colo. - The #7/8 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (18-12-1, 15-7-1 WCHA) suffered a tough 4-3 setback at Colorado College (12-14-5, 9-10-4 WCHA) on Friday, Feb. 22 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The victory moved the Tigers' unbeaten streak to six games, while the Huskies will look to get back into the point column in the second game of the series on Feb. 23 at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo. Game time is slated for 8:07 p.m. (CT) and fans can listen to the game live on www.knsiradio.com with Don Lyons calling the play-by-play.
Despite the loss, SCSU remained in first place in the WCHA with 31 points. Minnesota and Nebraska sit in second place after the games of Feb. 22 with 30 points apiece.
The Huskies jumped to an early 1-0 lead at 4:56 of the first period with an even strength goal by Jonny Brodzinski. Teammates Nic Dowd and Brooks Bertsch posted assists on the play. The assist was Dowd's 19th of the season and his 32nd point of the year.
The Huskies pushed their lead to 2-0 with another even-strength goal by Andrew Prochno just 11 seconds later at 5:07 of the first period. Joe Rehkamp notched his fifth assist of the year on the play. The goal was Prochno's third of the season.
The Tigers rallied with a goal by Jeff Collett at 9:41 of the first period, which made the score 2-1.
After a scoreless second period, CC tied the game at :33 of the third period with a goal by Charlie Taft. CC stepped into the lead at 4:27 of the third with a goal by Rylan Schwartz.
Taft added his second goal of the season at 14:08 of the third period, which pushed CC's lead to 4-2.
In the closing minutes of play, SCSU pulled goaltender Ryan Faragher to set up an extra attacker goal by Brodzinski.
A rookie from Blaine H.S., Brodzinski scored his team-leading 16th goal of the season at 18:49 of the third with helpers from Prochno and Nick Jensen.
The assits were Prochno's 14th of the season and it was Jensen's 21st of 2012-13.
Of note, Brodzinski now ranks 2nd in the nation among DI rookies with 16 goals this season.
The Huskies hit a season-high with 43 shots on goal in the contest including 19 shots on net in the third period. CC posted 29 shots in the game as Faragher made 25 saves in the game. Joe Howe was the goalie of record for CC with 40 saves.
