#8/10 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey Falls 4-2 to #1 Minnesota

St. Cloud, Minn. - In a battle between two of the nation's top college men's hockey teams in 2012-13, the #1 University of Minnesota (19-4-4, 11-4-4 WCHA) scored a 4-2 victory at #8/10 St. Cloud State University (17-11-1, 14-6-1 WCHA) on Friday, Feb. 8 before a crowd of 5,648 at the National Hockey and Event Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
Despite the loss, SCSU still maintained a three point edge in the WCHA standings with 29 points through 21 games played this season. Minnesota, Nebraska Omaha and North Dakota are all tied for second place in the league with 26 league points apiece. SCSU and Minnesota will complete the weekend series in St. Cloud with a 7:07 p.m. game at the National Hockey and Event Center.
Minnesota charted a 1-0 lead in the first period thanks to an even-strength goal at 8:45 by Nick Bjugstad, which was assisted by Kyle Rau and Nate Condon. The Huskies charged back to tie the contest at 1-1 with a marker by rookie Joey Benik at 14:48 of the first period. Teammate Cory Thorson provide the lone assist on the goal, which was Benik's first collegiate goal at SCSU.
In the second period, Erik Haula provide Minnesota with a 2-1 lead as he scored at 4:32 with a solo assist from Mark Alt.
The final period started strong for the Huskies as senior Hobey Baker candidate Drew LeBlanc scored his ninth goal of the season at 3:59 of the third period on the power play. Kalle Kossila and Nick Jensen each added assists on the play, which was LeBlanc's team leading 39th point of the year. The goal pushed Jensen's season assist total to 19, while Kossila now has 14 helpers to his credit this winter for the Huskies.
Minnesota broke SCSU's comeback with a pair of even-strength goal midway through the third. Haula posted his second goal of the evening with a 4x4 goal at 9:32 of the third period, which included an assist from Nate Schmidt. The Gophers sealed the win with a goal by Schmidt at 10:30 of the third period with assists from Brady Skje and Kyle Rau.
On the evening, SCSU was 1-of-2 on the advantage and UM was 0-of-2 on the power play. Minnesota outshot the Huskies in the contest 42-24, which marked the most shots on net in a game allowed by the Huskies in 2012-13.
Adam Wilcox was the goalie of record for Minnesota with 22 saves, while Ryan Faragher posted 38 saves in the setback for the Huskies.
