SCSU Wrestling in First Place After Day One at NCAA Finals

Birmingham, Ala. - The St. Cloud State University wrestling team completed the first day of competition at the 2013 NCAA Division II championships in top order at the Cross Plex in Birmingham, Ala. on March 8. The Huskies tallied 60.5 points on day one and sit in first place ahead of second place Notre Dame College (58.0) and Nebraska Kearney (57.0).
The Huskies saw seven of their nine wrestlers make it through the first day of competition and five of those wrestlers will be wrestling in the championship semifinals on March 9.
At 133-pounds, senior Andy Pokorny collected two wins on March 8 to advance to the semi's along with freshman Matt Nelson, who gained two opening round wins at 141-pounds. Senior Jacob D. Horn clinched All-America status with his two wins on March 8 at 149-pounds.
Clint Poster will be competiting in the semi's at 157-pounds of the Huskies after winning his first two matches and the group is completed by Shamus O'Grady, who picked up two opening round wins at 184-pounds.
The Huskies' Gabe Fogarty opened his day at 165-pounds with a victory before moving into the consolation bracket with a loss in the second round. He then advanced to Saturday with a big tech fall win at 165-pounds of Robert Shade of UNC-Pembroke.
At 285-pound, senior Jacob Kahnke gained a first round victory over Niko Bogojevic of CS-Pueblo before losing in the quarterfinals to Ziad Haddad of Kutztown in a 7-1 decision. Kahnke punched his ticket for action on Saturday with a 6-3 win over James Malechek of UW-Parkside in the wrestlebacks.
SCSU's Eric Forde suffered a first round loss at 125-pounds before picking up a win in the wrestlebacks. His trip to the NCAA meet ended with a second round wrestleback loss to Matt Turek of Gannon. At 174-pounds, Kurt Salmen lost in the first round to Pat Martinez of UN-Kearney and suffered a 7-1 setback against Kelly Henderson of Central Oklahoma.

HUSKY NOTES: Pokorny, Nelson, Horn, Poster and O'Grady have all clinched All-America status for 2013...the Huskies have now earned All-America status 57 times during the Costanzo era...Shamus O'Grady was featured in the Star Tribune on March 8 and also the NCAA.com website. O'Grady is 38-1 this season after his two wins on March 8. He needs two more wins to tie the team record for wins in a season, which was set by Tad Merritt at 40-2 in 2010-11...Coach Steve Costanzo will be aiming to win his first NCAA team title at SCSU. He also won a NAIA title at Dana College in 2006.
