Russellville, Ark. - The St. Cloud State baseball team ended their first weekend of the 2014 season with a 2-2 record as they fell to Quincy University 12-1 and #20 Arkansas Tech University 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.
In game one Sunday against Quincy, the Hawks took a 2-0 lead scoring off a couple of singles in the bottom of the first inning but the Huskies would bring the game within one in the top of the second. Karl Sorensen singled to right center in the second to score Zach Hoffmann for a 2-1 game.
The Hawks would continue to extend their lead though scoring two in the the second, six in the third, and two in the sixth for a 12-1 victory over the Huskies.
SCSU's Garrett Harrison was the pitcher of record in the contest with two innings of work. He posted one strikeout in the game and allowed six runs and four hits in the game. Coming in to relieve Harrison was Ryan Diers for two innings. Finishing the game for the Huskies was Scott Sanderson, pitching four innings to hold the Hawks to only two runs on two hits.
In game two against Arkansas Tech, it was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Tech took a 1-0 lead over the Huskies. They would extend their lead in the fifth 5-0, scoring on four hits.
St. Cloud would start their comeback in the top of the sixth as Zak Hoffman singled with Karl Sorensen on third to score making it a 5-1 game. The Huskies ended the inning with two hits.
It was not until the top of the ninth when the Huskies brought the game within one as Travis Enger hit a three-run home run to left field for a 5-4 game. St. Cloud was unable to get another run as they fell to Arkansas Tech.
Starting on the mound and pitcher of record against Tech with six innings of work was Logan Spitzack. Pitching half an inning for the Huskies was Nick Maiers and finishing the game was Reese Gregory for 1.2 innings.
"After three innings of game one we really started to play some good baseball with only one bad inning vs. Tech," said head coach Pat Dolan. "We faced two professional prospect type arms today that were hitting 90 on the gun and both threw a lot of first pitch strikes."
"Obviously going 2-2 isn't what we had planned, but we faced some solid teams and played well for 32-of-36 innings. We'll take a day off tomorrow and get back to work and get ready for Missouri S&T next weekend."
St. Cloud State will be back in action on Feb. 28 against Missouri S&T as they travel to Rolla, Missouri. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
