The freshman goaltender recorded her first career shutout against Minnesota State
For the second time in three weeks, St. Cloud State women's hockey freshman goaltender Janine Alder has been crowned WCHA Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Alder was honored for games played October 21-23.
The Zurich, Switzerland, native was instrumental in helping the Huskies take five of six possible points against Minnesota State in their first road trip of the season. She posted a .966 save percentage, stopping 56 of 58 shots, in the series. Alder turned away 30 shots in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Mavericks to record the first shutout of her career.
"She was rock solid back there," head coach Eric Rud said. "There were no rebounds and she was right on every point shot. (Minnesota State) has some players who can really rip it, so that was a very good performance from her."
Alder, who is 3-1-1 between the pipes, has been the goalie of record for each of SCSU's wins this season. She boasts a .964 save percentage and 1.07 goals-against average, marks which rank third and sixth, respectively, in the country and first and second in the WCHA.
This is Alder's second career WCHA weekly award win. She was also honored for her play October 7-8 against North Dakota. She is the fifth player, and first goaltender, in program history to be named Rookie of the Week multiple times in a single season.
St. Cloud State returns to the ice Thursday, October 27 and Friday, October 28 against in-state rival No. 2 Minnesota in Minneapolis. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. on both nights at Ridder Arena.
