MANKATO, Minn. – The St. Cloud State outdoor track and field programs were led by event wins from senior thrower Ryan Johnson, redshirt junior thrower Cassie Cardinal and a freshman jumper Desmond Deshay at the Minnesota State Twilight on Wednesday, May 4.
The two teams ended up winning a total of three events on the evening, had eight top-three finishes, a school record was broken and two NCAA provisional qualifying marks were reached.
Johnson won the hammer throw by breaking his own school record with a toss of 60.81m/199.06". It was his sixth hammer event win of the season. The season-best throw also better his previous NCAA Outdoor qualifying mark this season. Johnson also placed second in the men's discus with his throw of 52.42m/172'00". Additionally, the discus throw also reached NCAA Outdoor provisional qualifying standards.
Cardinal won the women's shot put with her throw of 13.19m/43'03.25". It was her first event win and second top-three finish in the shot put this season.
Deshay tied for the title in the long jump with his leap of 6.84m/22'0525". It was his second event win and third top-three finish in the long jump this season.
Senior Heather Clankie finished as the runner up in the women's discus with her throw of 44.68m/146'08". It was the third time this season that she has placed second in the discus.
Senior Rafael Saez placed second for the men in the shot put with his throw of 15.07.49'05.50".
Sophomore Isaiah Pitchford finished second in the 400m dash (49.13). It was his fourth time with a top three finish in the event this season.
The team's 4x100 relay team of freshman Vance Barnes, sophomore Marcus Welk, Deshay and freshman Wezley Turner finished third with their time of 42.37.
Both outdoor track & field programs will compete at the Winona State Open on Saturday, May 7, in the last tune-up before the NSIC Outdoor Championships from May 13-14.
