St. Cloud State sophomore forward helped her homeland to an international title
ST. CLOUD—While most St. Cloud State University students spent their winter breaks catching up on some much-needed R&R, women's hockey sophomore forward Suvi Ollikainen was busy adding a gold medal to her international resume.
Ollikainen and Team Finland captured gold at the 2017 Nations Cup, defeating Canada, 1-0, in the title game on Saturday, January 7 in Fussen, Germany.
"It is always an honor to play with the Finnish national team and to wear the Lions jersey," Ollikainen said. "It was a great experience. We played good games and had a lot of team spirit."
The Huskies sophomore helped Finland to an undefeated (3-0-0) record in group play. They defeated Austria, 7-2, Russia, 3-2, and Switzerland, 3-2, to win Group B before the gold medal win over the Canadians. Ollikainen centered her country's third line and played in all four games, recording an even 0 plus-minus rating in the tournament.
"It was a hard tournament. We had four games in four days," she said. "It was a good challenge for us to see what kind of condition we were in and how we can keep up at that level."
Ollikainen is well-versed at the international level. She played 47 games at the senior level for Finland over the last two seasons, including the 2015 and 2016 IIHF World Championships where she helped her homeland to third and fourth place finishes, respectively
The Nations Cup was held January 4-7 with play split between Fussen and Telfs, Austria.
