Rowles wins High Jump and Long Jump, Brouse wins 400 Hurdles while Romig wins 100 Hurdles
ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Cloud State Track & Field recorded four event wins – including a pair of wins by Julia Rowles in the High Jump and Long Jump – as part of a tremendous team performance on a cold, windy day at the Holst Invitational at Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul. Despite adverse weather conditions, Rowles' wins were followed by Brooklyn Brouse winning the 400 Meter Hurdles and Shelby Romig winning the 100 Meter Hurdles as SCSU recorded a total of 16 top 10 finishes.
On the track, Shelby Romig (15.96s) and Ainhoa Toquero (16.91s) placed first and fourth in the 100 Meter Hurdle preliminaries to qualify for the Final later in the day – Romig would go on to win the event with a 15.54s finish as Toquero took fourth at 17.30s. Erica Conrad placed fifth in the Steeplechase with a 12:38.20 time, then Cheresa Bouley (4:55.93) and Clara Welhouse (5:02.28) landed sixth and ninth respectively in the 1500 Meter. Katie Lavato opened a terrific day by taking third in the 100 Meter with a 12.74s dash, followed by Ava Wilmanns (14.01s) and Sydney Rustad (14.10s) earning top-20 finishes. Bouley placed fourth in the 800 Meter at 2:24.64, joined in the top 15 by Makaylin Christenson (2:34.31) at 11 and Jaileen Medina (2:40.47) at 14. Brooklyn Brouse won the 400 Meter Hurdles by more than six seconds with a 1:05.57 finish to claim the team's second event title on the track. Lavato closed things out by finishing runner-up in the 200 Meter, running a 26.79s with Wilmanns joining her in the top 20 at 29.57s.
Kasey Parish launched a 32.23m toss in the Javelin to take fifth, opening up a strong field performance for St. Cloud State. Dacoda Zimmerman earned a pair of top-15 marks in the throws, placing seventh in the Shot Put at 11.70m and 15th in the Hammer Throw at 39.90m. Julia Rowles won the first of two events with a 5.27 leap in the Long Jump, followed by Destiny Baughman (4.82m) in seventh and Ava Wilmanns (4.41m) at No. 11. Rowles won the High Jump with a 1.60m clear while Ainhoa Toquero soared into the top 10 at 1.45m. Baughman wrapped up SCSU's day in the field with a runner-up mark of 10.92m in the Triple Jump.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Sam Kettenhofen
"It was really good to get in a competition for our group today. The weather has been a battle all Outdoor season and today was no different with the cold temps – we competed well and got some good work accomplished. It was a positive day overall – we managed to compete well and warm up properly facing the adverse weather."
On the three SCSU event winners… "Shelby ran a better finals race. She continues to improve and we need more races to keep seeing time drop. Brooklyn ran well – a big improvement from last week which was great to see. She can definitely run faster – we just need to put a complete race together. Julia had a good day. She jumped well and executed despite the temps in the long jump and had some looks at a PR bar in the high jump. Things can still improve in both events for her but I'm pleased with the progress we are seeing."
"This week was another step in the right direction. A number of athletes continued to improve and show growth in their events – we have a couple more busy weeks of competition and plenty of opportunity to keep things going."
