
Belcher Named Assistant Coach for SCSU Track & Field / Cross Country and Nordic Ski

Former All-Big Sky runner returns to coaching world after 20+ years in higher education administration
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Director of Athletics Holly Schreiner hired Chris Belcher as an assistant coach for the Track & Field / Cross Country and Nordic Ski programs, as announced on Thursday. Belcher comes to the Granite City after an extensive coaching career at the collegiate and prep levels in Idaho.
Belcher will assist with all aspects of the Huskies' track & field and cross country program, as well as assist with the logistics and recruiting for the nordic ski program.
"St. Cloud State Athletics is excited to add Chris Belcher to our staff," said Schreiner. "Chris brings a strong desire to elevate our cross country, track & field and nordic ski programs and has the knowledge to make it happen. We look forward to kick off the season with him on staff and are excited about the future of the programs."
Belcher returns to the coaching world after spending the past 20+ years in the higher education administration industry, as he has held numerous roles at Idaho State University (2000-09), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA, 2012), Dickinson State University (2013-2016), Colorado Mesa University (2017-19) and Lewis-Clark State College (2019-present). In his immediate prior role, Belcher served as the Associate Director of Grants and Contracts at Lewis-State in Lewiston, Idaho.
From 1999 – 2012, Belcher was the track & field and cross country head coach at Highland Senior High School where he has coached his athletes to seven individual cross country state championships, seven individual track & field state championships and seven All-America honors. Four athletes were also named Gatorade Idaho Athlete of the Year honors under his guidance. He also experienced stints coaching at the collegiate level at Idaho State, serving as graduate intern in 2005 and as an assistant coach from 2009-10.
Belcher has earned three degrees from Idaho State University, receiving his bachelor's degree in political science in 1999, master of physical education, athletic administration in 2002 and doctorate of education, higher education administration in 2009. While obtaining his doctorate, he received the prestigious ISU College of Education Kole-McGuffey Prize for his dissertation on distance running. At Idaho State, he was a two-time All-Big Sky Conference and All-Mountain Regional cross country performer and was a member of the 1998 Big Sky indoor track & field championship team. He remains on the Bengals' outdoor top-10 list to this day, ranking sixth in the 5000m run at 14:28.22 and 10th in the 10,000m run at 30:45.42.
