Freshman goaltender recorded a career-high 45 saves in tie with No. 2 Ohio State, helped secure shootout win after saving all three shots she faced
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Freshman goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö (Nokia, Finland) was named Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday, following her standout performance between the pipes in the tie/shootout win over No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday. It is her second weekly award of the season and of her career (Goaltender of the Week – Oct. 7 | Rookie of the Week – Oct. 21).
Kyrkkö made a career-high 45 saves in Saturday's tie/shootout victory over No. 2 Ohio State, only allowing one full strength goal. She was excellent down the stretch, saving all six shots she faced in overtime and all three shootout attempts against her to help the Huskies earn the extra conference point. She led the WCHA in saves (45), saves/game (45.0), saves in a single game (45) and was tied for second in save % (.938) for games played last week.
St. Cloud State has now won each of the WCHA weekly awards at least once after Kyrkkö was named the Goaltender of the Week on Oct. 7 after earning a 21-save shutout win in her collegiate debut against No.15/RV Mercyhurst and senior defender Ella Anick (Hermantown, Minn.) and fifth year forward Emma Gentry (Alpena, Mich.) were named the conference Defender and Forward of the Week respectively on Sept. 23 after SCSU's season-opening sweep of Lindenwood.
Last weekend, the Huskies went 0-1-1 against No. 2 Ohio State (6-2-2, 4-2-2 WCHA), falling 5-1 on Friday before tying 3-3 on Saturday in regulation and winning the shootout to earn the extra WCHA point.
SCSU continues conference play with a home-and-home series against (RV) St. Thomas (4-2-0, 2-2-0 WCHA) on Friday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Oct. 26. Friday's puck drop is slated for 6 p.m. CT from the Saint Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights with Saturday's homecoming action taking place at 11:30 a.m. CT at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. Links to each coverage option will be available on the SCSU Women's Hockey schedule page.
