Seniors lead Huskies in season finale
JOPLIN, Mo. – St. Cloud State Cross Country ran to a 23rd place team finish at the 2024 NCAA Central Region Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning. The 6,000-meter race was hosted by Missouri Southern State at the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course in Joplin. The Huskies improved by six places as a team from the 2023 NCAA Central Region Championships and were the ninth NSIC team, one place better than at the conference meet on Oct. 26.
Seniors Cambrie Kowal (Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.) and Greta Freed (Rochester, Minn.) led the Huskies in the final cross country race of their careers. For the second season in a row, Kowal paced the Huskies at the regional meet. She crossed the line in 23:06.8 to place 97th, both personal best marks for the regional meet. Freed was the second for the Huskies, placing a regional meet best 107th place, in 23:19.0.
Sophomore Alena Donahue (West Salem, Wis.) was the third Husky, placing 142nd after running 23:53.6. Last year at this meet, she was 179th in 25:14.95.
Freshmen Abbygail Nunez (South St. Paul, Minn.) and MerriAnna Johnson (Osceola, Wis.) and sophomores Tegan Michalak (Arcadia, Wis.) and Audrey Rabitz (Manitowoc, Wis.) all competed in their first regional meet. Nunez ran 24:22.4 (155th), Johnson ran 24:42.1 (164th), Michalak ran 24:43.4 (168th) and Rabitz ran 27:03.4 (207th).
