Freshman forward honored for first time in career after three-point weekend
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Hockey freshman forward Maria Mikaelyan (Moscow, Russia) was named Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. Mikaelyan tallied three points (2 goals/1 assist) including her first two-point game in the series against No. 3 Minnesota. It is her first WCHA weekly award of the season and of her career.
Mikaelyan is the second Husky to win WCHA weekly honors this season, following sophomore defender Siiri Yrjölä (Vantaa, Finland), who was named Defender of the Week on Sept. 22. The freshman became the first Husky to be named Rookie of the Week since Emilia Kyrkkö (Nokia, Finland) earned the honor last season on 10/21/24 and the first skater to earn the honor since Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) did so on 10/16/23.
The Moscow, Russia native scored SCSU's lone goal on her only shot attempt in Friday's game at No. 3 Minnesota and contributed a goal and an assist in Saturday's series finale against the Gophers. She was the only Husky with multiple points on Saturday and was named the game's third star. It was her first career two-point game and her first career assist.
For the weekend, she ranked No. 1 in shot percentage (66.7% - 2-for-3), tied for No. 2 in goals and tied for No. 4 in points among WCHA skaters.
Her four goals this season lead the team by two and her five points are tied for the most among SCSU skaters.
The Huskies welcome (RV) St. Thomas (5-1-0, 1-1-0 WCHA) to St. Cloud this weekend for a series at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Friday's puck drop is set for 2 p.m. and Saturday's game will start at 1 p.m. Links to each coverage option can be found on the SCSU Women's Hockey schedule page.
