The Travelling Training Kit

Rivalary Trophy Between St. Cloud State and Minnesota State
The Legendary Travelling Training Kit
Inaugurated in 1978, the Travelling Training Kit signifies the rivalry between the two longest-tenured Minnesota members of the former North Central Conference - and current Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference members – St. Cloud State University and Minnesota State University.
The trophy features the MSU logo on a purple background on one side and the St. Cloud State logo on a red background on the other side. The winner of each year’s game takes home the coveted kit.
St. Cloud State and MSU started playing each other during the 1923 season, and have played on a regular basis since rekindling the rivalry in 1978 following a five-year break in the series. The next meeting between these two longtime rivals will be the 81st time the Huskies and the Mavericks have met. SCSU leads the series by a 42-34-4 margin. “The Kit” lays in Minnesota State's hands following a 45-12 victory in St. Cloud during the 2016 season by the Mavericks.

In 2004, Jeff Merron of ESPN.com compiled a Top Ten list featuring the “Most Bizarre College Football Rivalry Trophy,” with The Travelling Training Kit taking home the #2 spot. Only “Ye Olde Skull” was ranked higher, which went to the winner of the Ohio Wesleyan-Wittenberg game until 1989 when it was retired. With that, The Travelling Training Kit remains the highest-ranked active trophy in the nation. Merron’s description of The Kit is listed below:
“These two small Minnesota colleges have a gridiron rivalry dating back to 1923, but they didn’t start playing for the Training Kit until 1978.The trophy, conceived, not surprisingly, by the trainers of the two schools, consists of an empty tackle box.The tackle box is female, St. Cloud Huskies guard Cory McLouden revealed before the 2002 contest.“We plan on bringing the Trainer’s Kit home with us,” he said.“We may have to put a new coat of varnish on her. She’s looking a little rough.”
