Women's Hockey: Bulldogs Take Down Huskies

St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud State women's hockey team fell short Friday night at the National Hockey & Event Center dropping a WCHA contest to Minnesota Duluth, 4-1. The Huskies now drop their record to 4-8-1 overall, 2-7-0 in the WCHA.
The game was scoreless through the first period of play as sophomore goalie Julie Friend carried the Huskies stopping all 11 shots she faced.
The Bulldogs found the net in the second period at the 9:44 mark when Jenna McParland got one by Friend to give UMD a 1-0 lead over the Huskies. UMD would find the net only 24 seconds later to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage.
The Bulldogs found the net two more times in the second period taking a 4-0 lead before the Huskies found the net. It was sophomore Kalli Funk picking up the puck off the boards to score for the Huskies at the 16:12 mark of the second period. An assist was charted to Audrey Hanmer on the goal making it her fourth of the season.
The third period was like the first with a defensive game by both teams. UMD outshot the Huskies 15-6 in third.
All in all, Friend collected 34 saves for the Huskies who finished zero-for-five on the power-play, while Kayla Black stopped all 22 shots for the Bulldogs who were unable to score on their two power-play opportunities. Friend's record moves to 2-4-1 on the season.
St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth will return to action Saturday for game two of the WCHA series with the puck set to drop at 2:07 p.m. in the National Hockey & Event Center.
