Huskies Drop Series to Minnesota Duluth

St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud State women's hockey team dropped game two of a WCHA series to the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs Saturday in a 4-1 game. The Huskies now move their record to 4-9-1 overall, 2-8-0 in the ever-grueling WCHA.
Within the first minute of play the Huskies went on their first power-play opportunity but was not able to capitalize. At the 5:12 mark the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead with Brienna Gillanders power-play goal. UMD's second goal came only 39 seconds into their second power-play advantage taking a 2-0 lead over the Huskies at the 7:51 mark of the first period. The Bulldogs took the game into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead over the Huskies.
The second period was scoreless with both teams going zero-for-zero on power-play opportunities. Freshman goalie Katie Fitzgerald carried the team in the second period saving all 10 shots that she faced. The Huskies outshot the Bulldogs in the second period 13-10.
St. Cloud State came out strong in the third period scoring at the 1:53 mark. It was senior Lisa Martinson putting one past UMD's Sofia Carlstrom unassisted to make it a 3-1 game. The Huskies could not hold on as the Bulldogs got another one by Fitzgerald at the 7:49 mark of the third period.
Minnesota Duluth outshot St. Cloud State by a margin of 36 to 29 in the game. The Huskies finished zero-for-two on the power-play, while the Bulldogs went two-for-six on their power-play opportunities.
Fitzgerald totaled 32 saves in the game, while UMD's Carlstrom recorded 28 saves for the win. Fitzgerald moves her record to 2-5-0 on the season.
The Huskies will return to action Nov. 23-24 as they travel to Wisconsin to take on the Badgers in a WCHA series at the LaBahn Arena. Game time for both games is slated to start at 2:07 p.m.
