SCSU Women's Hockey Falls to Wisconsin 5-0

Madison, Wis. – The St. Cloud State University women's hockey team kicked off the First Round of the WCHA Playoffs Friday night against the #6/7 Wisconsin Badgers at the LaBahn Arena. SCSU was shutout by Wisconsin in game one 5-0.
With the series a best of three games and the winner prevailing to the WCHA Final Face-Off the Badgers lead the Huskies 1-0 after game one of the series.
Sophomore Julie Friend was in the net for the Huskies recording huge saves in the first period but Wisconsin was able to get one shot past her late in the period. The Badgers' Karley Sylvester fired a shot off at the 18:29 mark to take a 1-0 lead over SCSU. Assists were charted to Brianna Decker and Madison Packer on the goal.
The second period was all Wisconsin. Brianna Decker took the Badgers to a 2-0 lead over SCSU at the 8:16 mark of the second period with an assist from Madison Packer.
Packer scored for the Badgers on a power-play opportunity putting it into the right side of the net after bouncing off a SCSU player's skate for a 3-0 lead at the 14:11 mark of the second.
Wisconsin only outshot the Huskies by three in the second period with the shots being 9-to-6.
The Badgers continued to extend their lead in the third period scoring at the 10:30 mark for a 4-0 lead. Erika Sowchuk fired a shot off with Friend unable to react fast enough to stop the puck from going into the net. Wisconsin turned around and scored just 2:10 later to make it a 5-0 final score.
In net for the Huskies Friend posted 27 saves, while Wisconsin's Alex Rigsby recorded 17 saves for the win.
St. Cloud State (9-23-3, 5-22-2-1) and #6/7 Wisconsin (22-9-2, 18-9-2-2) will return to action on Saturday night for game two of the best of three game series. The drop of the puck is set for 7:07 p.m. at Wisconsin's LaBahn Arena.
