Minot, N.D.- The St. Cloud State women's basketball team was led by an outstanding performance by senior guard Betsy MacDonald to take down the Minot State Beavers 76-69 on Feb. 11.
The Huskies (11-13, 9-11 NSIC) had a slow start, allowing the Beavers (4-22, 2-18 NSIC) to jump out to a 2-11 lead before the offensive juices started to flow. By the end of the first quarter, the Huskies had closed Minot's lead down to just four points at 15-19.
The Huskies would battle for the lead for half the second quarter before finally pulling even with the Beavers at 23-23. The two teams would find themselves tied at 25-25 and the Huskies would make their move for the lead off a three pointer from MacDonald, one of her eight threes of the night. The Huskies would not be able to hold on to the lead and the Beavers would go into halftime up 39-35.
The two teams would go on to battle for position for most of the third quarter, trading off one point leads until the Huskies would tie the game at 49-49 halfway through the frame. This would prove to be the Huskies' turning point as they would break the tie and go on a 9-0 scoring run to end the quarter up 58-49.
The Huskies would not give up the lead for the remainder of the game and held the Beavers in check the final quarter to finish the match with a 76-69 victory.
MacDonald led the Huskies in the win with an impressive 32 points, going 11-18 in the match to include her eight three pointers. The next closest Huskies in the scoring department was Chelsea Nooker who put up 12 points on the game, Amanda Christianson would add 11 points for the Huskies to round out the double digit scoring. Nooker, Christianson, and Brianna Johnson each grabbed six rebounds for the Huskies and Andrea Thomas dished out eight assists.
The Huskies will return home Feb. 17-18 to finish the regular season by hosting Minnesota State-Moorhead and Northern State University. The Huskies will honor seniors Betsy MacDonald and Chelsea Nooker on Feb. 18 in recognition of Senior Night. Tickets can be purchased online at scsutickets.com or at the door.
