Men’s Basketball Drops Quarterfinal Matchup With Upper Iowa, 81-61

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Despite getting 25 points from junior Jon Averkamp, the St. Cloud State men's basketball team (19-14) fell by an 81-61 score to Upper Iowa (21-9) in the quarterfinals of the NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament at Sanford Pentagon on Heritage Court in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Sunday, Feb. 26.
Averkamp shot an effective 11-for-16 from the field for his 25 points, while also picking up seven rebounds. He was one of four players for SCSU in double figures. Sophomore Brindley Theisen and senior Scottie Stone both totaled 11 points with redshirt sophomore Gage Davis recording 10 points and 11 rebounds. The double-double was the 14th of the season for Davis and the 24th of his career. Sophomore Adam Heede-Andersen led the team with his four assists.
Upper Iowa was led by Jordan Hay's 20 points. Jimmy Roth tallied 18 points. Carson Parker totaled 16 for the Peacocks.
UIU shot 61.7 percent from the field (29-for-47) and 54.5 percent from three-point range in the game (6-for-11). The Peacocks also hit 17 free throws in 24 attempts (70.8 percent). The Huskies were limited to 37.1 percent shooting for the game (23-for-62) and were only able to knock down six threes in 20 attempts (20.7 percent). The program did hit 9-for-11 free throws (81.8 percent). SCSU held the rebounding edge 30 to 28, but were outscored 42 to 20 in points in the paint.
The Huskies trailed at the break by nine, 40-31. The team was limited to 1-for-14 (7.1 percent) from three-point range in shooting 39.4 from the field (13-for-33). UIU shot 58.3 percent from the field (14-for-24) and also knocked down six threes in the first half. Averkamp led all scorers in the contest with 16 in the first 20 minutes of action. The team shot 10-for-29 from the field in the second half (34.5 percent) and were able to hit five threes in 15 attempts in the second 20 minutes of the contest. This was a game that SCSU never were able to get a lead in and trailed by as much as 26 points in the second half.
