ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State women's basketball team is excited to announce that Abbey McDonald and Elizabeth Wortz are set to join the program in 2019-2020 season.
McDonald and Wortz currently make up the 2019 recruiting class for the Huskies women's basketball team, which will continue Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play this weekend at the University of Mary and Minot State.
"We couldn't be more excited to add Abbey and Elizabeth to our Huskies Family," head coach Lori Fish said in a recent statement. "They bring a toughness to our program that you can't teach. They have a team first mentality and will do whatever is asked of them. They bring energy on both sides of the ball. Abbey and Liza make their teammates better, and I look forward to having them part of our program."
Meet the women's basketball 2019 recruiting class:
Abbey McDonald (Guard; 5'7; Hibbing, Minn. / Hibbing)
Though she still has a season left to play, McDonald has already put together an impressive resume at Hibbing High School. As a junior in 2017-18, she became the school's all-time leading scorer in basketball for both the boys and girls teams with 1665 points in her high school career. As a sophomore in 2016-17, she became one of the youngest players in program history to record 1000 career points. Abbey is following in her dad's footsteps, as Joel McDonald was the NCC MVP for the SCSU men's basketball program during the 1994-1995 season and currently sits at No. 9 on the all-time scoring list.
Elizabeth Wortz (Guard; 5'6; Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson)
A 5'6 guard from Hutchinson, Minnesota, Wortz will join her sister Tori as a member of the Huskies women's basketball team in 2019-2020. Wortz was named team captain of the Hutchinson girls basketball team as a junior in 2017-18 and retained the role for her senior season in 2018-19. Elizabeth was named All-Conference Honorable Mention as a junior. As a freshman, Wortz was a member of the team that advanced to the state tournament and is also a member of the highly successful AAU team, the Minnesota Rise.
